As the daily CDD values cumulate over the course of a summer, those total numbers will be what actually drives contract valuation at the close of business each day. When the CDD total number is higher for a period of time in summer than for a period of time in winter previously completed, it indicates more average cooling energy was used, which makes the long CDD position more desirable.

 

Heating Degree Days (HDD) measure the temperature variation from the baseline mean of 65°F.
